Men's Health Q & A

What is men's health?

Men's health refers to a comprehensive approach to addressing the particular health concerns that affect men.

Men are at higher risk than women for developing a number of serious health conditions, including:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes

Men, unlike women, are at risk for developing prostate cancer and the risk of developing prostate cancer is much higher in older men. For this reason, your men's health evaluation may include a digital rectal exam as well as a PSA laboratory test to screen for signs of prostate cancer.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is another common disorder experienced only by men.

Men's health services can help men assess and manage their risk of developing these serious conditions. as well as issues concerning their sexual and reproductive health, such as erectile dysfunction.

At Prime Time of Life in Saratoga, California, Dr. Erdman provides comprehensive personalized men's health evaluations and offers science-based approaches to help men manage their unique risks and maintain long-term health and wellness.

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) occurs when a man is unable to reach or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity.

ED is a very common condition in men and a man's risk of developing ED increases significantly as he gets older. ED affects about 50% of men by the age of 50, about 60% of men by the age of 60, and about 70% of men by the age of 70.

Although erectile dysfunction is very common, it is not something you should just accept.

At Prime Time of Life, located in Saratoga, California, Daniel E. Erdman, MD, offers a full spectrum of treatment options for ED. These include more conventional therapies such as Viagra or other similar drugs classified as PDE5 inhibitors. The cost of these medications has dropped tremendously due to the recent availability of generic forms of both Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil).

Other treatment options include direct injection of vasoactive drugs (bimix, trimix, or quad-mix) into the penis (intracavernosal injection therapy). This option is often highly effective even in patients who do not respond well to Viagra or other PDE5 inhibitors. However, injection therapy can be painful, is obviously not the most convenient or spontaneous form of therapy, and has significant potential risks including the possibility of infection.

Supplements such as L-arginine and L-citrulline, which can boost nitric oxide levels, may also be very helpful in promoting better erectile function.

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is not appropriate for everyone but can be very helpful for many patients with ED.

Penile implant surgery is a last resort for the treatment of ED. The procedure is expensive, there are significant surgical risks associated with the procedure and the procedure is not reversible.

therapy is an innovative new, safe, and effective non-surgical option for the treatment of ED, which unlike other treatment options, actually addresses the underlying pathology responsible for ED in most patients.

To discuss which treatment options are best for you, please call to speak personally and privately with Dr. Erdman or schedule an appointment at Prime Time of Life in Saratoga, California, by phone or online today.
